| Expanding Opportunities was blessed in 2004 to have Catherine Sanders volunteer to establish the organic gardens, manage the alternative technologies and train a Kenyan to continue her work. She has far exceeded the expectations and made some wonderful friends. She will be remembered in Kenya long after her service is over. | Catherine arrived at the Joseph Waweru Home School in January. Not a week later, she was collecting manure for a compost pile and starting seedlings for the spring planting. As soon as possible she began the work of designing the raised beds. She remained in Kenya on a tourist Visa. She was forced to return home briefly after 6 months. In a few short weeks, her dedication to the task and desire to reach her goals drew her back to Kenya. |

| Water is a precious commodity in Mangu. Public water supply is unreliable, a very deep and mineral water table makes drilled wells impractical. The Joseph Waweru Home School is using rain water harvesting and a direct piped irrigation system to dispose of gray water. The line is laid in a shallow trench ending at the feet of the ever thirsty bananas | The Joseph Waweru Home School is a demonstration of alternative sustainable technologies. The Kenyan developed foot pump is a very simple well designed efficient way to pump water. Once a day or less, a short period of time on the foot pump moves water from the rain water catchment cistern to the gravity feed tank. A solar water heater provides hot water for showers and a solar panel provides power for lights. |

| Catherine's hard work was rewarded with beautiful gardens and bountiful produce. Not only are her gardens wonderful but she mangaed the Humanure composting, solar water heat and power, rainwater catchment, gray water irrigation, offered a presentation of her work at the Joseph Waweru Home School at the Biointensive Agriculture Institute and is training a Kenyan to carry on the work. Thank you Catherine! |
The carrots reflect Catherine's hard work. They dug deep and straight and the greens tall and strong. Thank you Catherine! |
