Service Journey
Barb and Gitonga Puppet show Barb and boys

Barb came to Kenya on the Service Journey. She performed several puppet shows for hundreds of school children. She met and worked with many different translators. The puppets fascinated both young and old. One of the most valuable things that volunteers offer is themselves. Barbara spent countless hours with the children at the Joseph Waweru Home School sharing stories, reading and working on homework. Barbara is a natural comedian. There was hardly a moment that those near her were not holding their sides with laughter. One night, it was as if there were young preteen girls in the house. The giggling, snickering and attemted supressed laughter went on into the wee hours of the night.

Nancy getting a chapati lesson

Barbara loves children and they know it. Even the most shy African child would warm up to her in minutes. Her smile and laughter drew them from far and wide. Her open heart was big enough for all. Soon she was surrounded by children. Never did she tire of their desire to surround her, play with her puppets, or touch her hair. "Hey everyone! I'm in Africa" Each morning, Nancy would rise stretch and give her joyous Africa call. She interacted with everyone. She loved to learn new things. In this image she is learning how to make chapati, Mama Mwangi style. The boys all chipped in to help. Everyone was involved and drawn into Nancy's enthusiasm. After returning to the US, Nancy used her new found chapati making skills at the annual Expanding Opportunities fundraising Kenya feast.

Shots Nancy

Nancy was willing to try anything and worked hard to help around the Joseph Waweru Home School. Here she is trying her hand with the African hoe called a Jembe. These L shaped hand held hoes are thrust into the ground and then pulled up to turn the soil. Nancy is a registered nurse. She used her skills at a local clinic, and assisted two other volunteers from California give shots to over 75 students at a mission school.
